South Dakota Schools Celebrate as $1.6 Million Made Available to Students

South Dakota Education Access Foundation Announces New Grant Program

South Dakota colleges, universities and technical institutes have a new reason to celebrate - as do their students. The South Dakota Education Access Foundation (SDEAF) just announced that all post-secondary schools in the state will share $1.6 million in grant funds to be made available to their students for the 2009-2010 academic year.

This allocation of funds by the recently created SDEAF is being made available to support its mission of providing financial support to low income students, students facing other barriers to postsecondary education, and students from other underrepresented backgrounds. As part of its continued philanthropy, the Foundation will spend 5% of its market value each year on student grants and supporting access to postsecondary education. The Foundation's current value is $33 million, thanks to a donation from Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation as a result of the recent affiliation of Education Assistance Corporation and Great Lakes.

The SDEAF Grant Program is uniquely designed to provide school financial aid administrators flexibility in choosing the recipients of SDEAF Grants who most closely meet the Foundation's mission statement. According to Clark Wold, President of Education Assistance Corporation, "The good that the program can do to help a student who might otherwise be unable to make the dream of college a reality may be transformational."
